Chapter 22. Webcams > Webcam Surveillance

Webcam Surveillance

Webcams are used to keep an eye on places and things that you want to protect. People are leaving their webcam live when they go on vacation so that they can periodically check their Web pages to make sure everything is okay at home or at work. The software is called both surveillance and spy software.

Video surveillance is in use in parking lots, stores, and playgrounds around the country. It's a good way to monitor and record suspicious events. By using a webcam as an inexpensive closed-circuit monitor, you can record video footage shot in your absence and route it to your computer. People have set them up to watch how the nanny treats the children and to see which pet dog is the one doing the damage while left alone. It's helpful to keep a watch on the side of a building frequented by vandals, to see who's visiting your elderly mother's house, or to keep track of what the kids are doing in the backyard (while you are busy working in your office). It could also be used to spy on a neighbor or capture somebody's keystrokes to gain access to their private password. In short, there are upsides and downsides to the technology.
