Chapter 22. Webcams > Internet Connection

Internet Connection

The faster an Internet connection, the better a webcam viewing experience will be. This is particularly true with a streaming video webcam. The larger the webcam images are, the harder the viewer's Internet connections have to work to see them.

Consider carefully the image size. It doesn't matter whether you're using a streaming or snapshot webcam: Larger images will not refresh as frequently as smaller ones. For example, an image that is 640 pixels wide by 480 pixels high (640 × 480) might be a beautiful picture, but it will take a significant amount of time for someone with a slow Internet connection to view it. In fact, many would get frustrated at the wait and just go somewhere else on the Web. Internet surfers can be impatient. A reasonable user-accessible image size would be 320 × 240, particularly if you plan to refresh the image every 20–30 seconds.
