Chapter 22. Webcams > Current Uses

Current Uses

A growing trend is with state-installed traffic control webcams. Many state transportation departments now offer webcam views of mountain passes, bridges, traffic bottleneck points, busy commute streets, freeways, and so forth. This is a boon for the commuter or traveler. It's easy to decide whether a midwinter trip through a mountain pass is a good idea or not with a quick peek at the current weather conditions. It's one thing to hear that there are snow flurries, another to see that the webcam is in total whiteout. And the ability to check the traffic cams before a morning commute is valuable in locating alternate routes to avoid trouble spots.

But as mentioned, there are a great many other uses for webcams. Many cities have webcams set up in various locations. Zoos have webcams. Amusement parks, radio stations, sports arenas, and colleges have webcams. The following sidebar contains a list of webcam directories and other links.
