Have you ever wanted to watch what's happening on the other side of the world? Wouldn't you like to see how much traffic there is on the highway before you leave for work in the morning? Or perhaps you'd just like to know whether the coffeepot in the next room is full without having to get up from your desk.

The idea of looking in on your pot of coffee from another room is actually not so far-fetched. In fact, there was a famous coffeepot. In 1991, some researchers in Cambridge, England had an idea. They worked on different floors of the same building and decided to save time during the day by pointing a video camera at the company coffeepot. The camera was connected to the company's internal network. The researchers would check to be sure that the coffeepot wasn't empty before leaving their desks to refill their cups.
