Chapter 20. The Ten-Step Commute > Your Remote Access Choices

Your Remote Access Choices

Fortunately, the choices for remote access are as varied as the types of user. One popular method is to use remote control software to connect to a computer and operate that computer as though you were in front of it. A completely different method favored by businesses is to use a VPN to make a remote computer an actual part of the network. Still other solutions, such as application delivery servers, allow you to use your office applications without needing to install anything on a remote computer. In this section, we'll explain these different methods, describe why each might be appropriate for you, and provide a few examples of real products.

Remote Control Software

A popular way to give access to computers and a network is through remote control. This software relays the screen images and keyboard input between a host computer (such as an office computer) and a client computer (such as your computer at home). Using remote control is like having your host computer in front of you wherever you are (Figure 20.1).
