Chapter 16. Streaming Media > Protocols and Codecs

Protocols and Codecs

Streaming media encoders, servers, and players must have a way to communicate with each other. They are able to convert files to and from the streaming media format. This is where protocols and codecs come in.

Protocols are a set of rules to determine how communication takes place between software applications. There are a number of different streaming media protocols in use, such as RTSP (Real Time Streaming Protocol), RTP (Real Time Protocol), and MMS (Microsoft Media Server). They are similar to HTTP, the protocol used to deliver Web pages, but optimized for streaming media delivery.
