Chapter 11. Security > Other Applications

Other Applications

Firewalls and antivirus protection are a great start in securing your computer. Just don't think you get to stop there. You've added good defenses; now it's time to plug some holes. And they're probably more prevalent than you'd like to admit: bugs in your apps, inherently insecure products, maybe even an overly friendly operating system.

Thanks to buffer overflows and other bugs, many programs can offer a clever hacker a red carpet right onto your computer. Even your operating system itself could have bugs that a wily hacker can exploit. You should always download and run the latest patches for your programs. (Egregious security vulnerabilities are usually fixed very quickly by software companies, often before many hackers take advantage of them.) Don't let time go by without patching! The longer a security bug is known, the more tools are created to exploit it. It just gets easier and easier for hackers.
