Chapter 11. Security > Protection

Protection

Now that you know what you're up against, you can defend yourself. We'll look at some proven techniques and products to help keep you secure, but the most important tool is your brain. Above and beyond the specific tactics, you've got to adopt an attitude of security. It's like driving. You've got to pay attention always. There's a lot you can take for granted, but you should be ready to react at a moment's notice if something goes wrong.

On Your Computer

The most common PC security products are antivirus, firewalls, and intrusion-detection systems. Every product has its specific uses; nothing plugs all possible security holes. This is why multilayered security is critical, just as in the real world. Every house has door locks; houses in rough neighborhoods or with a lot to protect also have alarm systems. As we've seen, the Internet's a pretty rough neighborhood, so don't use just a personal firewall; use an antivirus program, too. All the time.
