Summary

The future of the Internet threats isn't pretty. The hacker communities thrive, sharing new hacks and simpler hacker tools with more people than ever before. The new viruses are increasingly insidious and complex. We've already seen new, disturbing trends, such as viruses that can actually reengineer their own code; as they spread, they evolve (!) so that antivirus software can't recognize them. And we'll only see more “blended threats,” such as Klez viruses that target multiple vulnerabilities at once.

On the other hand, the future of Internet security is bright. It's an exciting and lucrative industry, so some of the smartest people in the world are working very hard to keep you safe. Products such as ZoneAlarm Pro successfully defend against “unknown” threats, even protecting against malware that has not been identified yet. And unlike in the Internet's infancy, every new technology or product these days is analyzed for security almost from the get-go, if not by its own makers then by the hacker communities themselves. Vulnerabilities don't stay that way for long.
