Chapter 11. Security > Security Is a Process

Security Is a Process

The moral of this story is that security is not an item on a checklist. You can't just say, “Well, I'm glad my new computer comes with Security. Now I can relax.”

Security is a process; it never ends. You must always keep your security products upgraded and software patched, and adjust to new conditions. Consider the security ramifications of everything. Want a new peer-to-peer application to share MP3s? Just be aware that you'll have to punch a hole (i.e., open a port) through your firewall to use it. Want to access your home PC from work? Make doubly sure that your remote access software is solid. Want to open the neat screensaver grandma just sent you? Call her up and make sure she's really the one who sent it (then tell her to quit sending you files that might be hiding Trojans, anyway).
