Portable MP3 Hardware

These very small players, about the size of a transistor radio, let you download music in any order you want onto them. It's like having your own music radio station, except without the commercials, deejays, and songs you don't like. The hardware is solid state, skip free, and can play for hours on one AA battery.

Initially, the record companies tried to block the sale of portable MP3 players, but then they relented. Some manufacturers compromise and incorporate digital rights management to prevent users from transferring music they have legitimately purchased from one format to another format. Hardware that uses Memory Stick and SD Flash memory may have this capability.
