Copyright

To obtain a registered copyright, you must submit a copy of the work (as well as a fee and application form) to the Unites States Copyright Office. It in turn files it in its archives and supplies you with a certification document. For more information on the benefits of and how to obtain a registered copyright, visit the United States Copyright Office Web site at www.copyright.gov or talk to an intellectual property attorney.

Other Protection Methods

If you don't feel the need to register your work officially but do want to protect it and notify others that you are the rightful owner, you simply assert copyright. Although this is not a registration, it is for practical purposes sufficient to protect your rights as the author (or owner) of a work.
