Modem Architectures

Different types of modem hardware are distinguished by their architecture, i.e., where the processing takes place in the modem or in the computer. There are three general types of modem hardware: controller-based, controller-less (or Winmodems) and softmodems.

Controller-based modems do all of the processing work, freeing up your computer's processor to handle other tasks and provide the best overall performance. Internal models plug into one of the expansion slots inside your computer, and external models plug in through a serial or USB port. External RS-232 modems are always controller-based modems.
