Summary

The future of wireless handhelds in all forms is secure. You'll either be carrying around a slim PDA that acts as a phone or a phone that acts as a PDA. The open question remains: How will these devices access and utilize the Internet and the Web? And what software will be needed to talk to these devices from the Internet? The trend that is emerging is not toward specialized browsers and device-specific coding to make sure that a Web page can be seen by any number of devices. Instead it is toward a universal system that can manage to take a normal Web page and adapt it to the device so that special coding is not needed. But that day is still a ways off, and if you want to communicate with the handheld world from the Internet, you're going to have to do some extra work—at least for now.
