Chapter 13. Get Your Web Site > About Domain Name Registration

About Domain Name Registration

There are benefits to registering a domain name for your Web site. If your Web site is for business purposes or for reasons beyond a vanity Web site, a domain name is an affordable way to add “branding” to your online services. Additionally, it's usually much simpler to remember than the URL provided by your ISP (compare home.earthlink.net/~joesgarage to www.joesgarage.com). Portability is another added benefit. If you decide in the future to switch to a new ISP, your domain name and any email addresses associated with your domain name can come with you.

Registering a Domain Name

To purchase a domain name, you must find an accredited registrar. There is a variety of domain name registrars to choose from. A simple search for “domain name registrars” in your favorite search engine will reveal more sources than you can count. For a list of accredited registrars by the ICANN Organization (Internet Corporation for Accredited Names and Numbers), go to http://www.icann.org.
