Chapter 4. Finding What You Need > The Dark Side of the Net: Pesky Marketing

The Dark Side of the Net: Pesky Marketing

Everything in life comes with the good and the bad. The Internet is no exception. You most likely have discovered the dark forces of the Internet in the disguises of pop-up ads, pop-unders, Flash ads blocking your reading view, spybots, and banners that make you dizzy with their animation, flashing, and bright colors. You're ready to go surfin' on the Web and boot up your browser to begin. Whaaaatt??? This isn't your home page! Some other new home page has taken over and throws pop-up ads left and right. Thinking this is just a fluke, you close the browser and maybe even restart your PC; the same scenario happens again. Your browser has been hijacked. This is another @(#*$ advertising technique that sneaks into the PC without your knowledge. In most cases, this technique piggybacked on software you downloaded and installed or from a Web page you crossed. This has happened to us, and we've never been able to pinpoint the source.
