Chapter 9. Downloading Online Content > Reliable Content and Information

Reliable Content and Information

Spoofing is a hot topic on the Web. It is a common problem. Spoofing occurs when a user thinks he or she is going to a certain location, only to be tricked into going to another. You can also be fooled as to the contents of the file you are downloading and find you have downloaded a completely different thing. It's the bait and switch of the Internet—in essence, a con job. (For more information on this, see Chapter 11.)

Content Issues

One of the hardest issues for users is whether the downloadable content and information are legal to own. The problem is that not all software available is really “free.” The Internet has made it easier for people to download both legal and illegal versions of software. (Later in this chapter, we'll discuss some legal avenues to inexpensive or free software.)
