Types of Modems

Let's take a closer look at the different types of connection speeds that are currently available. Remember that your connection speeds change constantly due to the other computers you are connecting to, as well as any Internet lag that will directly affect your downloading time. Modem speeds are measured in bits per second. A bit is one unit of data. Eight bits, or a byte, constitute a word of data. This becomes all the more confusing because this word of data corresponds to 8-bit computing. Since the advent of 16-bit, 32-bit, and now 64-bit computing, word size has actually increased. But in general, we still consider 8 bits to be a byte.

When talking about modem speed, the measurement is in bits per second. So when talking about the transfer rate of so many bytes per file, you'd multiply the number of bytes by 8, then divide by the bits per second speed of the modem to get the rough download calculation.
