Disk Requirements

Let’s consider the file types covered previously in terms of the disk space required for their storage, management, and (if resources allow) archiving. The demands for each type varies.

The Source File

These files not only vary in size, but they also tend to be sponges that soak up hard drive memory. Source files vary in size, depending on the capture settings (both for audio and video) and the particular clip’s duration. The best way to figure out a Source clip’s size is to remember that for every thirty seconds of full-screen, DV-quality, captured video (thirty seconds being a good-sized clip for editing purposes), it costs you about 110 MB of hard drive space (see Figure 11.7). Archiving clips that size can be tricky.
