Premiere Mobility: Understanding File Types

In today’s GB-driven world, it is expected that laptops can handle the demands of nonlinear video editing. With Premiere 6.5 and DV, a presentation can easily be compiled and edited on a laptop computer and played back on the computer’s FireWire port or a DV camera. Instead of being trapped in a single place because the gear was so big and heavy, you can take it with you— spending endless hours editing on a laptop in your den, a plane at 35,000 ft, or anywhere else!

Now that laptop computers can handle the demands of DV editing, we have another option to consider—a mobile editing setup, as seen in Figure 11.2. Although there are obvious advantages in going mobile with your DV editing suite, there are still advantages to working in Figure 11.1’s desktop computer environment. Working on a desktop, you have the ability to work with additional peripherals, such as large monitors, scanners, and disk arrays. The laptop DV suite offers you the luxury of mobility.
