Chapter 12. Hints and Tips for New DV Ed... > Situations and Solutions in Shooting

Situations and Solutions in Shooting

Can you take good footage and make it great in Premiere? Yes. When your footage is shot well, framed well, and you have good composition in your subject matter and its environment, editing in Premiere is a snap! Quality video is a real delight to edit.

Now, for the dose of reality: Quality footage is not so easily obtained, even by seasoned professionals. So many unknowns come into play when shooting—bad weather conditions, windy days, traffic noise, and so on. The editor is faced with taking whatever footage he or she has and turning it into a superior product. That is one of the challenges of editing—taking hours of footage and putting it all together to create something seamless, concise, and clean. In addition, especially if the footage has been provided for you, you have little if any control over its quality. Are the shots long enough for editing? Was enough footage shot? Is the camera steady? These are factors beyond your control when you are receiving footage from others.
