Chapter 13. DVDs, VCDs, and Beyond

This book has focused on teaching you Premiere inside and out, as well as how to deliver projects in any format, whether the Internet, multimedia, or full-screen video. However, technology waits for no man, nor does it casually hang back for any writer. In just a short amount of time, both recording technology and alternatives in playback formats have grown significantly. It is simply amazing to see how quickly the ability to output and produce DVDs has developed in the past few years. This new medium has become more and more affordable each month with the introduction of faster, more efficient burners.

Videotape is hardly in danger of becoming extinct—this year—but with the rapid advances in disc-based recording technology, who knows? There are already professional, camera-mountable DVD recorders made by Hitachi. Other video manufacturers have shown consumer, disc-based products in development. The ability to produce digital media (with a potentially longer shelf life than analog VHS tape) has become accessible to anyone with editing skills, Premiere, and the right computer hardware.
