Chapter 1. DV 101 > Video Basics and Then Some

Video Basics and Then Some

There is a lot to know in the world of video editing. This section teaches you about the technical aspects of video editing. Why all the tech stuff? Because it really is important. If all you want to do is edit your vacation video, this section covers more than you might need to know, but there are still key terms you should be familiar with regardless of what you actually plan to edit. If you want to start cutting your company’s next training video or your first independent DV film, you need to know this material to avoid some potentially major problems down the road— problems that cost time and money, or produce poor results. Editing is about story telling and making that story look and sound good.

A good place to begin is with learning the various video formats. By now, you probably already have a video camera in your collection of equipment, but what kind of video does it shoot? VHS? Hi8? DV? In this book, we work extensively with the DV format. An understanding of the other video formats will also show you just how terrific the DV format is. To get some idea how far video has come in the past few years, see Figure 1.1.
