Chapter 1. DV 101 > What’s New

What’s New

This latest release of Premiere 6.5 includes several major new enhancements and many smaller ones. One of the biggest new features is the new Titler tool. Completely rewritten, it is a powerful tool that is ready to go head to head with any of the other titling tools out there. One of its many new features is the ability to create text along paths; in other words, you can make text follow a curved line, a circle, or a combination of straight and curved lines. You can also scale and rotate text freely, directly on the computer screen. To see your title on a video monitor, there is a preview-to-monitor function that sends your title to the video monitor. The Titler tool also has built-in presets to get you started making great-looking titles without having to start from scratch. The presets are great for learning how effects work, such as shadow and stroke. They also serve as a great starting point for creating your own text styles, which can then be saved as custom presets.

The Titler tool also lets you draw shapes, such as boxes and circles, on the screen. Professionals often use these shapes behind text to help provide better separation of the text from the background. Shapes can also be used as design elements to make better-looking titles. If you use the various styling options, you can bevel the edges of shapes for a 3-D look and put a gradient on the shape for a more interesting look.
