Chapter 4. Capturing Digital Video and M... > Using Premiere for Digital Audio/Vid...

Using Premiere for Digital Audio/Video Capture

Importing digital video is very different from importing analog video. For one thing, digital video does not require A/V hardware. DV cameras sometimes come with or offer (upon sending in the right paperwork) a FireWire/IEEE-1394 card you can install into any PCI slot. You can also connect a camera to a daisy chain of FireWire drives and devices. The DV experience can be summed up in one word: Easy.

FireWire/IEEE-1394 devices are promoted as “plug-and-play” devices, so there is no need to shut down the computer before this exercise. However, if your Mac or PC does not recognize your DV device, then it isn’t a bad idea to restart your computer. You should already have either a free FireWire/IEEE-1394 port on your computer or the FireWire/IEEE-1394 card you received with your camera should be installed into an appropriate PCI slot.
