Know Your Place: Shooting Specific Events

Perhaps your greatest challenge as a videographer will be facing the unknown elements of your shooting environment. In most cases, you will arrive on location with no prior knowledge of what the environment is like. Will you be filming inside or outside? Will there be a lot of people around you, or will you be in a more intimate setting? Knowing how the camera works is only a small part of recording quality footage—anticipating conditions and responding to them appropriately is just as important.

There is an infinite number of reasons why you would want to capture an event on video, but the majority of these events can be categorized into four primary classifications. These classifications give you a bit of a head start, allowing you to formulate a “game plan” for shooting an event; they include sporting events, performances, special occasions, and vacations.
