Chapter 4. Trimming > Creating Split Edits

Creating Split Edits

Understanding the Trim mode is crucial in learning how to edit in Avid Xpress Pro. It allows you to make changes quickly and effortlessly. It also allows you to create much more powerful edits called split edits. Split edits are edits whereby the audio and video do not cut at the same time. They are used in all types of programs to add to the story. A simple example is when an interview starts and you hear the person talking but you do not see them. Instead, you see cutaway shots or a shot of the person walking by the camera. Split edits are an editor’s best friend. They provide chance to change the rhythm and tempo of a sequence.

Avid Xpress Pro can split edits easily. First, you edit your sequence exactly the way you would if you were to use straight edits. Tighten the edits to your liking. To perform a split edit, simply perform a dual-side trim with just the video or audio track. The result is that you’ll hear one thing while you’re seeing something else (see Figure 4.30).
