8. Calibration > 8.1. Hacks 60–74

Hacks 60–74

If you’ve read the earlier chapters and have been trying out stuff as you go, you might know how to tweak your TV for basic HD viewing [Hack #35] , be comfortable with figuring out where best to place your sub [Hack #52] , and even pulled the screen off of your RPTV [Hack #17] . Hold on to your remote, though, because this chapter is going to take you to a whole new level.

To calibrate simply means to check, adjust, or determine by comparison with a standard. That might sound pretty basic, and something that you could do with a few spare minutes. In home theater parlance, though, calibration is an entire science unto itself. From getting the white on your particular TV to be “true” white, to ensuring that Jurassic Park sounds not how you like it, but how Crichton wanted it to be heard, to keeping the back of your TV from crushing you when adjustments are needed, calibration is the key. You’ll find a huge number of hacks in this chapter, and these are culled from literally hundreds more. Take the time to work through this entire chapter, and you’ll be in a movie theater rather than an old, converted garage.
