Overwrite and Insert edits are the basic building blocks of the editing process; you will use these editing options in almost every project. There are, however, ways you can set up an edit other than by marking a clip in the Viewer. How and where you mark an edit depends on your material and your editing approach. For example, you can mark portions of a narration or voice-over track, or even music, directly in the Timeline, to determine the length and placement of new material.

In this lesson, you will explore marking in the Timeline and other ways to make changes to your sequence, such as deleting clips and gaps, adding sound effects, editing from the Browser, and linking separate audio and video clips together.

As in all projects, editing functions follow purpose. As you explore these different editing options, think about how you might apply them to your own projects.
