Applying effects

Effects can be added to clips or removed at any time. Additionally, you can modify an effect after it has been applied. In this exercise you will apply effects to a clip to create a black and white effect.

To apply an effect to a clip in the timeline

1.
Make sure you are in the Effects workspace by clicking the Effects button in the Task bar.

Click on the arrow to the left of the Video Effects folder to view the list of subfolders. Then click on the arrow to the left of the subfolder named Image Control to view the list of effects. You will be applying the Black & White effect to the first clip in your timeline. If the clip Effects1.avi is not currently showing in your Monitor window, click on the clip in your timeline, notice the video is in color.

To apply the effect, click and drag the Black & White effect from the Effects window onto the first clip in your timeline (Effects1.avi.) The effect is enabled immediately and the clip is now in black and white.

4.
Press the spacebar to see how the Black & White Effect is enabled for the entire length of the clip. When the clip is over, press the spacebar to stop playback. Note that the next clip is in color. This illustrates that effects are only enabled for one clip at a time.
