Lesson 4. Basic Editing > Pretrimming clips in the Monitor window

Pretrimming clips in the Monitor window

Remember that trimming clips in the Timeline is nothing more than changing the in and out points of a clip to new points. You can also modify the in and out points more precisely by using the Monitor window. In this exercise you will take one of the Tape 02 clips that you imported, mark new in and out points to trim the clip, and then bring the clip into your timeline.

1.
Double-click the clip Tape2_02.avi and it will load into the Monitor window. Press the Play button () and notice how there is a long period of time in the shot before the children begin their race.

2.
Use the current-time indicator in the Monitor window to locate the section right before the children begin to move. In the clip monitor, the left-hand value is the timecode of the clip, the right-hand value is the overall length of this clip, in this case 23;10. We moved our current-time indicator to 01;06;15;22.

3.
Click the Set In Point button () in the Clip window to set a new in point. A marker appears underneath your current-time indicator, additionally, the region you are retaining is a darker gray.

4.
Now you will set an out point. Move your current-time indicator in the Clip window to 01;06;33;19 and press the Set Out Point button ()

5.
At the top of the Monitor window, click on the Timeline button () to switch to the Timeline and then press the End key to place the current-time indicator at the end of the timeline. You will be adding the clip you just edited at the end of the project.

Note

If your current-time indicator does not move to the end of the project, your first clip may have been selected. Pressing the End key when a clip is selected will place the current-time indicator at the end of the clip, not the project. To place the current-time indicator at the end of a project, click on an empty area of the timeline and then press the End key.

6.
To return to the clip view, press the Clip button in the Monitor window and then drag and drop the clip into the end of your timeline.

7.
Press the Home key to play the project from beginning to end. When you are done, save this project as Lesson04_End.prel.
