Using the Razor tool

The Razor tool allows you to cut single clips into multiple clips if you choose. Or, as in this exercise, you can split a clip into two clips and then delete the unnecessary one.

1.
Press the Home key to return the current-time indicator to the beginning of the timeline and press the spacebar. Notice the man hesitates and takes a few breaths before speaking. You will be cutting this first portion out using the Razor tool.

Drag the current-time indicator to the 2 second mark. Scrub your current-time indicator back and forth as you did in the previous exercise to find the point right before the man starts talking. We used 02;06 in the timeline.

Note

This technique of “scrubbing” the current-time indicator back and forth to view your video and hear the audio is a technique which can take some getting used to, but the more you practice it, the easier your editing will become.

3.
Select the Razor tool () in the left-hand corner of the Timeline window and place it over the edit line of the current-time indicator, click once to split the clip. Press the Home key to place the current-time indicator at the beginning and better see the split clips.

4.
To delete the first clip, click on the Selection tool () and then click on the first clip. Press the Backspace or Delete key to delete the small section. Press the spacebar to play, and notice how your first clip looks and sounds better with the extra footage removed.
