Audio Channels

Multiple audio sources can be recorded and stored as a single set of data, or they can be recorded separately and stored in discrete channels. A monophonic (mono) audio file contains a single channel; a stereophonic audio file contains two discrete channels; 5.1 surround contains five discrete channels as well as an optional LFE (low-frequency effects) channel that contains additional low-frequency data not present in the five main channels.
