Pixel Aspect Ratio

Different video formats can capture and display the same full-screen, 4:3 image using different pixel dimensions. Whereas certain (generally older) capture cards create a full-screen, 4:3 image using 640 × 480 pixels, DV captures the same image using 720 × 480. How is this possible? Even though their image aspect ratios are the same, their pixel aspect ratios (PARs) are different. The former uses square pixels, or a PAR of 1 (Figure 16.23); the latter uses nonsquare pixels, or a PAR of 0.9 (Figure 16.24).
