Chapter 4. Managing Clips > Selecting and Deleting Items in the Project Window

Selecting and Deleting Items in the Project Window

You can select items in the Project window in much the same way as you select files in the operating system. However, when you delete an item from the Project window, bear in mind that you're deleting only a reference to a file on the hard disk, not the file itself. So if you delete a clip, the project will no longer require that clip, but its source media remains on the hard disk. When you attempt to delete a clip that's in a sequence, or a sequence that has clips in it, Premiere Pro prompts you to confirm the action.

To select items in the Project window

1.
If necessary, open the bin that contains the clips you want to view.

2.
To select a clip or clips, do one of the following:

  • Click an item.

  • Shift-click a range of items.

  • Ctrl-click several noncontiguous items.

  • Drag a marquee around two or more items (Figure 4.31).

  • Choose Edit > Select All to select all items.

  • Choose Edit > Deselect All to deselect all items.

To delete items from the Project window

1.
In the Project window, select one or more items.

2.
In the Project window, click the Delete button, or press Delete on your keyboard.

Deleting a clip removes it from the project, but the source file remains on the hard disk (Figure 4.32). If the clip is used in a sequence, Premiere Pro prompts you to confirm your choice.

✓ Tip

  • You can use the Project Manager to help with basic housekeeping: remove unused clips, and collect all of the clips you are using in a new location. See “Using the Project Manager” later in this chapter.
