Working with List View

List view lets you organize items according to a number of categories that appear as columns in the Project window. You can select which columns you want to include and add your own custom columns. You can also resize and rearrange the columns to suit your organizational method. However, you can rename or permanently remove only custom columns, and the Name column is always the first column.

To hide or show columns in list view

1.
In the Project window menu, choose Edit Columns (Figure 4.14).

The Edit Columns dialog box appears.

In the Edit Columns dialog box, select the headings for the type of information you want to view when the Project window is set to list view (Figure 4.15).

Click OK to close the Edit Columns dialog box.

Only the columns you specified appear in the Project window.

To add custom columns

1.
In the Project window menu, choose Edit Columns.

The Edit Columns dialog box appears.

In the Edit Columns dialog box, click Add (Figure 4.16).

An Add Column dialog box appears.

In the Add Column dialog box, type the name of the custom column (Figure 4.17).

Choose an option from the Type drop-down menu (Figure 4.18):

Text: Creates a column of text fields in which you can enter information.

Boolean: Creates a column of check boxes, which you can use to indicate a yes or no state.

Click OK to close the Add Column dialog box.

The new column appears in the Edit Columns dialog box.

When you have finished editing columns, click OK to close the Edit Columns dialog box.

To edit columns

1.
In the Project window menu, choose Edit Columns.

The Edit Columns dialog box appears.

In the Edit Columns dialog box, select a column name and click any of the following buttons (Figure 4.19):

  • Rename: Renames a custom column.

  • Remove: Removes a custom column.

  • Move Up: Moves a column one item higher in the list, which moves it to the left in the Project window.

  • Move Down: Moves a column one item lower in the list, which moves it to the right in the Project window.

3.
Click OK to close the dialog box.

The Project window reflects your choices.

✓ Tip

  • You can't rename or remove any of the default columns, but you can hide them.


To rearrange headings in list view

  • With the Project window set to list view, drag a heading in the Project window to the left or right to place it where you want (Figures 4.20 and 4.21).

To adjust a column's width in list view

  • With the Project window set to list view, drag the right edge of a heading in the Project window to resize it (Figures 4.22 and 4.23).

To sort items in list view

  • With the Project window set to list view, do one of the following:

    • To sort clips by a particular column heading, click the heading (Figure 4.24).

    • To reverse the sort order, click a column heading twice (Figure 4.25).

    A small triangle next to the column name indicates whether items are sorted in ascending or descending order.
