Chapter 4. Managing Clips > Viewing Items in the Media Window

Viewing Items in the Media Window

You can view the items in the Media window two ways: as a list or as icons. In list view, items are listed with rows and columns of information, which can help you sort and organize your clips (Figure 4.2). Relatively speaking, list view can show more items at once, and its columns are key to managing a large number of clips. In icon view, on the other hand, items in the Media window are arranged in a grid (Figure 4.3). This view tends to take up more space, but it lets you lay out the items like photos on a table. You can use icon view to create a kind of storyboard, which you can assemble into a sequence automatically (using the Create Slideshow feature, explained in Chapter 5, “Editing Clips into a Sequence”).

Both view types let you choose whether to represent each clip as an icon representing the type of footage or as a thumbnail image of the footage. You can even set the size of the items.

The sections that follow explain how to work with each view, so you can customize the Media window for the task at hand.

To change the Media window view:

  • At the bottom of the Media window, click the button that corresponds to the view you want to use (Figure 4.4):
