Breaking and Creating Links

As you know, a linked clip contains both video and audio. Although the video and audio portions of the clip appear in different tracks of the timeline, a link between the two portions of the clip helps maintain their synchronized relationship. (See “Understanding the Link Between Video and Audio,” earlier in this Chapter.)

As you’ve learned, you can use the Alt key to select the video or audio portion of a linked clip to manipulate them separately. But sometimes, you want to break the link altogether, so you can manipulate the video and audio independently. Note that although you can break or create links in the timeline, the links of the source clips and their associated media files on the drive remain unaffected.
