Chapter 3. Capturing and Adding Footage > Generating Synthetic Media

Generating Synthetic Media

In addition to accepting a wide variety of source files, Premiere Elements can generate useful clips of its own. The Media window’s New Item button includes options for creating bars and tone (like the ones that TV stations broadcast after hours), black video, a color matte, and even a standard countdown. These files are called synthetic because they don’t create a new file on your hard disk; they exist only as part of your project, not as independent files.

The New Item button also includes an option for creating titles. Titles are saved as independent files, like other files listed in the Media window. However, creating titles deserves a chapter all its own: Chapter 9.
