Chapter Seven. Sound on the Set > Meet Your Sound Crew

Meet Your Sound Crew

Members of a sound crew on a movie set have highly specialized jobs, and union rules to define them. If you need to cut corners on crew expense, don't do it in the sound department. If you think holding a microphone is the perfect job for a nonprofessional, think again! Use inexperienced volunteers for heavy lifting or coffee runs, but keep them away from the mics and sound gear.

Some soundtrack artists don't go to work until you get to postproduction: ADR supervisors, Foley artists, musicians, composers, voice-over talent, and so on. We'll discuss them in postproduction chapters. (For more information on postproduction sound, see “Replacing Dialogue” in Chapter 11.)
