Configuring an Editing System: Three Examples

We're not in the business of building NLE systems—or endorsing products—but you may find it helpful to consider three examples of system configuration, including an economy desktop setup, a high-end desktop setup, and a notebook. The costs listed below are both current and approximate; they may have changed drastically by the time this book reaches your hands.

Configure for Lowest Cost

Here's a sample configuration designed to run Vegas 4 on a Windows PC. Many PC manufacturers, including IBM, Sony, Compaq, Dell, and Gateway, now offer specially configured “DV workstations,” including fast processors and hard disks, high-performance video and sound cards, and FireWire connections. The example shown in Table B.2 is based on one of those bundled systems. It includes two high-speed hard drives, one for programs and the other for video data.
