Which Mac or Which PC?

Which Mac or Which PC?

We hope our lengthy survey of NLE software packages has helped you form at least a preliminary opinion about which one best fits your needs and work style. Once you've chosen an NLE, it's time to buy or build a computer that will run it. Check the manufacturers' recommended hardware specs, but feel free to exceed them if you can afford it. Any NLE program you buy will be a very greedy beast.

Choosing an NLE Package

As you get to know more about the various NLE applications and their respective features, your preferences for hardware and software will probably become more sophisticated, depending mostly on what you intend to use your editing system for. Ask yourself:

  • Do you intend to hire out your services as an editor? If so, compatibility with high-end systems, particularly Avid-equipped suites, will be extremely important.

  • What types of projects will you specialize in? For example, do you intend to produce for film, television, or the Web? Different products excel in each of these media.

  • How much sophistication do you want—and how much can you afford? Do you need complex transitions and animated effects? Multi-layered soundtracks? If you're producing animation, special effects sequences, or commercials, you'll want extensive compositing and finishing tools, either as built-in features of your NLE or as plug-ins.

  • What's the running time of your typical project? The answer will tell you how much disk storage you require (Remember, you'll need 13 GB for every hour of stored video.)
