Appendix A: Digital Video Technology in Depth

Appendix A. Digital Video Technology in Depth

Digital video can be a highly technical subject. However, as we've emphasized repeatedly, the better you know your tools the better your results will be. For example, videographers and editors in particular really do need to become proficient in the details of recording formats, file conversion, compression trade-offs, and color correction—to name just a few of the trickier topics. So, for those of you who enjoy working under the hood, this appendix supplements the discussions on camcorders in Chapters 3 and 4. For technical background on editing systems, see Appendix B: Selecting and Building an NLE System.

RECORDING FORMAT: A technical standard for capturing pictures and/or sound on magnetic or optical media.

COMPRESSION: Processing data to describe it with fewer bits and store it in smaller files. If you want even more information, take a look at the sources cited in the References and Web Links section at the end of the book, which are listed by chapter.
