Understanding Mask Anatomy

It can be useful to describe the contour of a mask as a path. All mask paths consist of control points connected by segments. In a straight-sided polygon, control points define the vertices; in a curved shape, however, they determine the curve of adjacent segments. You can control the curve manually by creating a standard mask that uses a Bézier curve (Figure 9.16). (Many path-based drawing programs, such as Illustrator, also employ Bézier curves.) Alternatively, you can let After Effects calculate curves automatically, creating a RotoBezier mask (Figure 9.17).
