Matte Tools Effects

The Matte Tools category includes two effects available only in After Effects Professional. Both effects are used to “choke” a matte.

As you may know, the grayscale image that describes the opaque and transparent parts of a corresponding image is called a matte. Choking a matte is jargon for slightly contracting the matte's edges (although you can use the same effect to expand the matte). Because it's notoriously difficult to derive a good matte (or, in compositing parlance, pull a good matte) using keying techniques, keying effects can be greatly enhanced by applying a matte choker.
