Blending Characters

As you learned earlier in this chapter, it's possible to make characters in the same text layer overlap (for example, by severely reducing the tracking or leading). If the character's fill or stroke permits it, you'll see that each succeeding character overlaps with the last, a little like the scales of a fish. In other words, each character appears as though it's on a higher layer than the one that precedes it—even though the characters are all on the same layer. (The same is true for each succeeding line of text.)
