Lesson 7. RotoShape > Roto Tips

Roto Tips

  • View the clip and determine which frame will require the greatest number of knots to create the shape. Create the shape on this frame.

  • Create as few keyframes as possible to animate the shape, but as many as needed so that the shape properly follows the object. For instance, on a 60-frame clip, start by adding keys at 1, 30, and 60. If you need more animation, add keyframes at 10, 20, 40, and 50. Continue to refine the animation by adding keyframes in-between to create an exact match.

  • Creating too many keyframes can cause jittering in the shape.

  • A Tracker, which is a node that analyzes the motion of a clip, can be attached to a shape. The motion from the Tracker is used to animate the shape's horizontal and vertical positioning. It sure beats animating frame by frame. To attach a Tracker to a shape, right-click on the shape transform control and select Attach Tracker to Shape. This calls up a list of precreated Trackers for you to select from. Tracking is covered in Lesson 13.
