Rendering Out of Maya

Rendering Out of Maya

Maya has something called render layers, which allow you to choose which objects will be rendered together. These layers can be rendered out as separate beauty, diffuse, specular, and shadow passes. You should only use this system for the most simple of scenes. It doesn't handle reflections and tends to break down once scenes get more complex, especially where raytracing is involved.

Instead, you'll either need to create a MEL script to automate your multiple passes (or have someone make you one), hunt down a multipass plug-in from the Web, or simply save out separate scene files for each pass, turning on and off the visibility of objects and the properties of lights. Let's take a quick look at ways to render out these different passes from Maya.
