Building the Composite

Now that the background clip is stabilized, you can put together the rest of the shot. In this example, you are going to combine the choppers with the background clip using an Outside and an IAdd node—more on this in a moment. You will then add the chopper's light beams and lens flares together, also using the IAdd function. Next, you will add KeyMix nodes to bring the choppers and their lights from behind the ship to the front of the ship. Finally, you will use a Brightness node to color correct the choppers and add some rim light on the boat as the choppers fly overhead.

Adding the Choppers

The first step in this effect is to combine the choppers with the background clip. The choppers have an alpha channel, so you might say to yourself, “Self, put the choppers onto the background clip with an Over node.” But you'd be wrong.
