Applying effects

An effect can be added to a clip that is already in the Timeline window, or the effect can be dragged to the Effect Controls window if the clip is selected in the Timeline. Effects can be added to clips or removed at any time. You apply video effects and audio effects in the same way: you select the clip and you apply a selected effect. Video effects are listed in the Video Effects dialog box; audio effects are listed in the Audio Effects dialog box. A clip that has an effect applied to it appears with a blue-green bar at the top of it in the Timeline window. An effect can be modified after it has been applied. For instance, it is easy to make adjustments after you preview an effect.

After you've applied effects to a clip, you can temporarily turn off one or all of those effects to concentrate on another aspect of your project. Effects that are turned off do not appear in the Program window and are not included when the clip is previewed or rendered. Turning off an effect does not delete the keyframes created for any of the effect's settings; all keyframes remain until the effect is changed or deleted from the clip.
